An Apostille is a certification introduced by the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961 for authenticating documents for use in foreign countries. The exclusive purpose of Apostille is to certify the authenticity of the signature of the document. Apostille is an authenticating document attached to another document so that it will be accepted when used overseas. Documents issued in the United States can only be processed by the State of their origin. In other words, you if have a Birth Certificate issued in California, you can get an Apostille on it only through the California Secretary of State office.
Does your Marriage Certificate need to be apostilled?

If you travel abroad for work or any other reason, you are required to have a certificate, confirming that you don’t have a criminal history or felonies which will restrict you from traveling to the country of your destination. That country can ask you for a background check issued within the past 90 days with an apostille.
Does your Certificate of Incumbency need an Apostille?
A Certificate of Incumbency is a document issued by a company or corporation that outlines the corporate officers of the company by listing the names of its directors, its officers, and, sometimes, the shareholders. Outside of the United States, this document is also referred to as Secretary’s Certificate, Register of Directors, Officer’s Certificate, or Certificate of Officers. 
A Certificate of Incumbency defines which people hold which positions within the company. This document is typically used to confirm the identities of a company’s officers and to prove that they are authorized to be involved with legal transactions on behalf of the company. If your company runs international transactions your Certificate of Incumbency needs to have an Apostille to be accepted abroad.
Does your Certificate of Residency (also referred to as IRS Form 6166) need to be apostilled?  
IRS Form 6166 is a computer-generated statement printed on stationery bearing the U.S. Department of Treasury insignia and certifying that the individuals or entities listed are residents of the United States for purposes of the income tax laws of the United States. This form is used for claiming income tax treaty benefits, and/or certain other tax benefits, in foreign countries.
Do you need to get your Death Certificate apostilled?
An Apostille for Death Certificate is generally required when the family requests to settle the estate and/or the inheritance deeds of the deceased in another country, when the family needs to transport a casket/urn of the deceased internationally, or for re-marriage.
