Social Security Administration (SSA) regularly sends income and benefits letters to U.S. Citizens. However, if you divide your career between the USA and another country, have business with projects or offices in another country, or just wish to spend your retirement years abroad, you will be asked to get your Social Security certificate apostilled to become valid for international use. You should start with requesting a copy of your Social Security Letter directly at the local SSA office, or the SSA website ssa.gov.
Depending on your particular situation, you may either need to request from the SSA office an SSA Benefits Letter, or Certificate of Coverage. SSA Benefits Letter also often referred to as Proof of Income Letter, is a document confirming that its holder receives Social security benefits or Medicare. SSA benefits letter is generally requested by Consulates to issue long term visas/residency permits for those who wish to reside in another country and receive US social security benefits.
Certificate of Coverage is requested if its holder divides his/her work between the United States and another country. You may need a Certificate of Coverage to avoid paying double Social Security taxes if you are an employee of a U.S. company or corporation that manages or supervises overseas operations.
Occasionally people request Apostilled Social Security Letters after they already left the United States. Even if you are out of the country, you can still mail your SSA letter to our office and we will obtain an apostille on it.
