While the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate office located outside of the USA can assist you with notarizing your documents, they are not able to obtain the Apostille on them. So, if, for example, you plan to get married in the country you are currently in, you will be able to sign and notarize your paperwork with a U.S. Federal notary public at the local U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate office. They might also assist you with preparing a Single Status Affidavit if you are planning to get married in the country you are in. However, no U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate can issue apostilles. The apostille will be issued through the U.S. Department of State – Office of Authentication in Washington, D.C.
At some U.S. Embassies, the staff may be able to assist you with obtaining an FBI background check apostille. They can take your fingerprints for the FBI Channeler or the FBI directly.

For instance, if you are a U.S. passport holder currently located in Germany but need to sign and notarize documents for use in Sweden, you can visit the local U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate office and have your documents signed and notarized there. Once notarized, you can mail these original documents to our Global Apostille office and we will obtain the apostille on them.
