China Embassy Legalization

Do your documents require China Embassy Legalization Services?

The People's Republic of China has one Embassy in Washington D.C., and also maintains five consulates-general in the following U.S. cities: New York, NY; Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Los Angeles, CA; and Houston, TX.

Before the documents can be submitted for legalization service at the China Embassy, they require to be legalized by its State of issue, then by the US Department of State, and finally, they can receive China Embassy legalization. Documents issued by the US Federal government (for example, FBI Background check for China) only require the US Department of State legalization before they can be submitted to the China Embassy for legalization service.  Apostille cannot be processed for the documents going to China as China is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. A two or three-step Legalization process instead is needed for all official documents destined for China.

To complete the Legalization process, the Embassy of China will require the following documents:

  • China Embassy Application Form
  • Color copy of your national passport or driver’s license

Please note that the Embassy Legalization can only be processed via the Embassy of China in Washington D.C. The five Consulates of China cannot process Embassy Legalization. Consulates of China are jurisdictional and only service applicants within their respected jurisdiction. Please see below the list of China Consulates and the states in each of their jurisdiction:
