Does your California-issued background check require an apostille?

You can request a background check in California from the government agency on the City, County, State, or Federal level. Generally, the country and the authority requesting an apostille on a background check will specify which government agency you should obtain it from. All California-issued background check reports will receive a California apostille. Some countries will require an FBI Background Check Apostille. In this case, an apostille on your document will be processed by the US Department of State. If you were asked to provide an apostilled FBI background check, then an apostille will be done by the US Department of State in Washington DC, since the FBI background check is a federal document.
You may be asked for a California apostille on a Background check report from the local Police department, local Sheriff’s state office, or California Department of Justice (DOJ). If the country of your destination requests an apostille on your background check issued by the Police department or the Sheriff’s office, you will need to have your Background check letter drafted and properly notarized by California licensed public notary, and the notary should use the appropriate notarial affidavit for the State of California.
If the country requesting your Background check apostilled requires that this document is issued by the California Department of Justice, you will first need to obtain your fingerprint results through the LiveScan service, then contact the California Department of Justice and request a signed letter from the Criminal Identification Specialist before you can submit your background check for an Apostille.
You can obtain a background check even if you already have left the United States. In this case, you will need to contact the local US Embassy/Consulate and ask them to help you with fingerprinting.
If the Background Check is requested by a non-member country of the Hague Apostille Convention, then your documents may require further authentication through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and legalization through the Embassy / Consulate office.
