Does your Car Title need to be apostilled?

You will be required to obtain an Apostille for your Car Title if: 

• Your car was stolen/recovered in another country.
• Your plan to ship your car to a foreign country and will need to register it in that country.
• You have sold your car to a buyer from a foreign country, and a buyer wants you to have the Car Title signed, notarized, and apostilled.  
• You are a foreign buyer and have purchased your car from the United States.

Before obtaining an apostille on your Car Title, you must have it signed and notarized. If you are in the United States and selling your car to a buyer abroad, all you need to do is request a notary public to notarize your signature on a Car Title.  If you are not selling your car, you can make a color copy of your Car Title and take it to a local notary public. You may need a written affidavit attesting that a color copy of your Car Title is a true copy of the original Car Title in your possession. 

If you selling your car, all you have to do is meet with a notary public and have your signature signed and notarized.  If you are not selling your car, simply make a color copy of your car title and meet with a local notary public.  You can write an affidavit and attach it to the color copy attesting that the copy is a true copy of the original in your possession. This affidavit is also called Copy Certification by document custodian. Some states allow notary public to certify your Car Title in your absence.

If you are a US Citizen but are currently outside of the USA, you can notarize your document through the notary service at the US Embassy/Consulate office.  Please check with the US Embassy/Consulate if you need an appointment for a notarization service.

Obtaining an apostille can be intricate. Avoid leaving this task for inexperienced staff or non-professionals who are not fully aware of the complexities of the apostille process and the unique requirements of certain countries. Your application may be rejected, and you lose time and money. Make a better choice!
