Apostille for Birth Certificate

Do you need an apostille on your Birth Certificate?

There are quite a few reasons why you would need to obtain an apostille on your birth certificate issued in the United States.  Some of the most common reasons include: getting married in a foreign country, property inheritance abroad, obtaining dual citizenship.

The State Registrar issues birth certificates in your state. If you live in Georgia, for example, all Georgia issued birth, death, and marriage certificates bear the name of current State Registrar Donna Moore and her title.

For your birth certificate to become legally acceptable in a foreign country, you will need to obtain an apostille from your State Office. An apostille certifies the signature of the official who has signed your document.  In Georgia, the Department of State will certify the signature of current State Registrar Donna Moore and attach a Georgia apostille. When you request an official birth certificate in your state, always look for the title and signature of the State Registrar on it, that’s how you know you have the right form of a birth certificate.

Obtaining an apostille can be intricate. Avoid leaving this task for inexperienced staff or non-professionals who are not fully aware of the complexities of the apostille process and the unique requirements of certain countries. Your application may be rejected, and you lose time and money. Make a better choice!
