California Birth Certificate Apostille

Do you require an apostille on a California birth certificate?

If you were born in the state of California and want to move to a foreign country for work, study, marriage; or plan to obtain dual citizenship, you will need to have your birth certificate apostilled. An apostille confirms the authenticity of your birth certificate, the stamps, and signatures on it, and makes it legalized for use in all member countries of the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961.

How to get a California apostille on a birth certificate?

If your California-issued birth certificate is endorsed with the signature of a Health Officer or County Registrar (e.g. Local Registrar, Registrar of Vital Records) before you can mail your certificate to our office for apostille processing, please make sure that you complete one of the following:

• Have your birth certificate certified by the County Clerk’s office in the county in which it was issued, or
• Obtain a certified copy of that birth certificate from the county recorder or the State of California Department of Public Health.

The signature, name, and title of the public official can be found at the bottom of a birth certificate.

The California Secretary of State issues an Apostille for the signatures of the following:

• County clerks and their deputies,
• County recorders and their deputies, and
• The State Registrar (California Department of Public Health).

You can request your original birth certificate directly from the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in person or by mail. Please note that birth records are only available from CDPH Vital Records after they have been recorded by the County Recorder's Office. Because of the delays resulting from this process, CDPH Vital Records recommends that birth certificate certified copies be requested from the County Health Department or the County Recorder's Office for the first 3 months after the event.

You can also obtain certified copies of your California birth certificate online via online services like VitalChek or VitalRecordsGov.

Once you obtain an original or a certified copy of your California birth certificate you can mail it to our office for apostille processing. Remember that an apostille can only be processed in the same state that issued the document, so your birth certificate issued in California will receive California apostille.
