What you need to know about Apostille on FBI Criminal Background Check

Apostille on FBI Criminal Background Check is a fairly standard requirement for people going abroad to study, work, or for other long-term stays. Also, if you plan to adopt a baby, get married, or become an ESL teacher in a foreign country, you will be asked for an apostilled FBI background check. Some countries, including France, South Korea, Spain, and Portugal, have stricter requirements for visa issue and always ask for FBI background check apostille. Many countries in Latin America, such as Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico to name a few, will sometimes require an FBI background check apostilled. We recommend requesting an FBI background check every time you plan to go to a different country for work, education, or other essential reasons. 

You can request an FBI criminal background check in two ways:

  • By contacting the FBI directly (please check the FBI website https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks for information on how to request a background check
  • By contacting an FBI Approved Channeler, who can provide you with step-by-step instructions on obtaining a background check

Once you receive your FBI background check report you can either email us a PDF copy of it or send us a hard copy by regular mail for obtaining an apostille. 

Documents issued by the federal government, which also includes an FBI background check, are authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.  Most countries will only accept background checks issued and apostilled within the past 90 days.  If your background check is older, you may need to obtain a new one. 
 
Besides the apostille on the FBI background check certificate, many countries require that your apostilled FBI background check is translated into the language of the country where you intend to present the document. Please check with us if you need help finding a certified translator to translate your apostilled FBI background check.

Obtaining an apostille can be intricate. Avoid leaving this task for inexperienced staff or non-professionals who are not fully aware of the complexities of the apostille process and the unique requirements of certain countries.
