You can request an FBI criminal background check in two ways:

  • By contacting the FBI directly (please check the FBI website https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks for information on how to request a background check
  • By contacting an FBI Approved Channeler, who can provide you with step-by-step instructions on obtaining a background check

Documents issued by the federal government, which also includes an FBI background check, are authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.  Most countries will only accept background checks issued and apostilled within the past 90 days.  If your background check is older, you may need to obtain a new one.

Besides the apostille on the FBI background check certificate, many countries require that your apostilled FBI background check is translated into the language of the country where you intend to present the document.
